AN INVESTIGATION OF SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN CONSTRUCTION SITES IN KENYA (A CASE STUDY OF COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS IN NAIROBI.

ABSTRACT
 
This study investigated the implementation of Safety Management Systems in Construction sites in Kenya (A case study of Commercial Building in Nairobi). These studies focused on the Safety Management Systems because safety plays a paramount role in the construction industry, due to ignorance and absence stringent policies some of the aspects of Safety Management System are overlooked and this leads to accidents and injuries in construction sites. Consequently, this study has been undertaken to establish the Safety Management Systems in place, the extent of the implementation of the Safety Management Systems and challenges faced by the contractor in the implementation of Safety Management Systems. To fully satisfy these objectives, the researcher employed the use of questionnaires to conduct a survey on the contractors and the professionals on the site and the data was interpreted by the aid of SPSS. The findings of this study indicate that aspects of the Safety Management System like the safety policy are not implemented sufficiently implemented in most sites. The study recommended that more safety consultants should be trained by recognized authorities such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Aggressive and thorough safety induction conducted to both new workers and visitors on site, workers should be represented in the safety committees on sites and generally, more aggressive implementation of the existing Safety
